Survey of India, The National Survey and Mapping Organization of the country under the Department of Science & Technology, is the oldest scientific department of the Govt. of India. It was set up in 1767 and has already completed 250 years of its existence. In its assigned role as the nation's Principal Mapping Agency, Survey of India bears a special responsibility to ensure that the country's domain is explored and mapped suitably, provide base maps for expeditious and integrated development and ensure that all resources contribute with their full measure to the progress, prosperity and security of our country now and for generations to come.
Department has now grown and spread in all parts of the country with its 8 x zonal offices and 22 Geo-spatial Data Centres covering 29 states and 7 UT’s along with 4 Printing Groups and 6 Specialised Directorates providing the basic map coverage required for the development of the country. Its expert advice is being utilized by various Ministries and undertakings of Govt. of India in many sensitive areas including settlement of International Borders, State Boundaries and in assisting planned development of hitherto under developed areas.
The department has completed many projects of national importance to name a few National Urban Information System (NUIS) were mapping of 152 towns on 1:2000 scale for core area and 1:10,000 scale for the peripheral areas , Integrated Coastal Zone Management” (ICZM) project, were 0.5 meter elevation contour map on 1:10,000 scale as base map to delineate the Hazard Line for the entire mainland coast of India up to the maximum width of 7 km from shore line on the landward side, generated up-to-date digital topographical maps of Major Indian Coal fields covering an area of 26,400 sq.km. for Central Mine Planning & Design Institute (CMPDI), a subsidiary of Cold India Limited using aerial photographs and adequate ground checks and other ongoing projects as National Hydrology Project(NHP) and National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) mapping 3 states using UAV.
As the vertical Datum was defined in 1905 without gravity observations and sophisticated instruments, as the accurate heights are required for developmental projects and inundation mapping with the requirement of height accuracy within few centimeters, it is necessary to redefine vertical datum therefore SoI has taken up the job of redefinition of Indian Vertical Datum, its continuous endeavour is also to dedicate CORS Network to the service of the nation because this Geo-spatial Infrastructure will provide location information of cm level accuracy in real-time across the country which will provide major boost to GoI initiatives like Smart City, Digital India, DILRMP and Urban Planning and Development. Efforts are made
To provide Geoid Model with the accuracy better than 10 cm for generating highly accurate-high resolution DEM for water management of all the River Basins of the India. To be abreast with the new technology in mapping SoI is adopting LIDAR and UAV technologies in upcoming new projects. Also we are evaluating to implement state of art technologies available in the industry to improve the workflows in order to capture accurate, cost effective and timely Geo-spatial Data, to meet the needs of sustainable national development. It has already started the web service of its 1:50K data OSM data through SoI portal https://indiamaps.gov.in and also started a data collecting app “SAHYOG” to populate the National Topographical Database (NTDB).
Survey of India will take a leadership role in providing user focused, cost effective, reliable and quality geospatial data, information and intelligence to meet the needs of national security, sustainable national development, and new information markets. Survey of India dedicates itself to the advancement of theory, practice, collection and applications of geospatial data, and promotes an active exchange of information, ideas, and technological innovations amongst the data producers and users who will get access to such data of highest possible resolution through its geo web portal.
