About Dehradun

Dehradun, is the state capital of Uttarakhand, 236 km North of New Delhi and is located in the Doon Valley on the foothills of the Himalayas nestled between the river Ganges on the east and the river Yamuna on the west. The city is famous for its picturesque landscape and slightly milder climate and provides a gateway to the surrounding region. It is well connected and in proximity to Himalaya tourist destinations such as Mussoorie, Dhanaulti, Auli and the Hindu holy cities of Haridwar and Rishikesh along with the Himalayan pilgrimage circuit of Chhota Char Dham.

The prestigious Indian Military Academy, Forest Research Institute and Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology are situated at Dehradun.

Sahastradhara

Sahastradhara literally means ‘thousand – fold spring’. A picnic spot comprising water falls and caves provides a marvellous and rejuvenating experience. It is famous for its ecstatic beauty and therapeutic value since its water contains sulphur.

Tapkeswar Temple

It is one of the oldest Lord Shiva Temple in Uttarakhand and is located at the banks of Nandi river. Tapkeshwar Mahadev Temple is located at 6.5 km from Dehradun city. As water droplets continuously drops on the shivling, hence it was named as ‘Tapkeshwar’.

Forest Research Institute

FRI is an institute of the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education and is a premier institution in the field of forestry research in India. It is among the oldest institutions of its kind. In 1991, it was declared a deemed university by the University Grants Commission. The Forest Research Institute campus hosts the Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy (IGNFA), the staff college that trains officers selected for the Indian Forest Service(IFS).

Guchhu Pani/ Robbers Cave

One of the best places to go for sightseeing in Dehradun city . Robber's Cave (locally known as Guchhupani) is a natural cave river formation in Himalaya, located approximately 8 km. from Dehradun city. The place is believed to be used by robbers to hide. Robber's Cave is famous for a strange natural phenomenon as per which, a stream of water appears then disappears underground, and potentially appears again after few yards.

Mindrolling Monastery

One of the largest Buddhist learning centre in India. 35 meter high statue of Lord Buddha, 60 meter high stupa and well maintained gardens are worth visiting. One of the six monasteries of the Nyingma school of Buddhism, Mindrolling Monastery, was built in 1965 by Khochhen Rinpoche.

Clock Tower Dehradun

A prominent landmark, Clock tower commonly known as Ghanta Ghar is an iconic building of Dehradun. Located in the heart of the city, it is encircled by commercial complexes, shops, and GPO. Construction of Ghantaghar was started in the year 1948 and completed in 1953. It was inaugurated by former prime minister Lal Bahadur Shastri and has a unique hexagonal architecture lending it heritage value. Take a closer look at it and one can see the names of freedom fighters engraved in gold plaque all over its surface..

Wadia Institute Of Himalayan Geology

One of the finest Dehradun, India points of interest include Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology. Established in June, 1968, it is an autonomous research institute for the study of Geology of the Himalaya. The institute also has a museum which offers a glimpse into the mighty Himalayas, its origin, its evolution, and life in the geological past. If this place doesn’t give you travel goals, we don’t know which place will.

Mussoorie Mall Road

Located in Mussoorie, Mall Road is the best place to shop as there is a cluster of small and large shops displaying the best products. You can pick variety of items from here like Tibetan carpets local jewelries, brass statues, wooden crafts work, Garhwali paintings and woolen items.

Weather

Dehradun experiences a humid subtropical climate. Monsoon in Dehradun lasts from July to September. During this season, Dehradun experiences ample rainfall. The entire city comes to life as the rains give a brighter hue to the lush green mountains. During the months of October and November, autumn season kicks in. The weather cools down, followed by winter season that starts in December and ends in February. The temperature ranges from 22 °C to 3 °C and the nearby regions such as Mussoorie, receive snowfall. Woollen clothing is recommended during this season.
